About the Staff and the Family Foot and Ankle Centers

Dr. Richard S. Mendelsohn D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Dr. Richard Mendelsohn enjoys working with patients of all ages on a multitude of foot and ankle ailments. Widely recognized as a specialist in the treatment of sports and dance injuries, he is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and also is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Society of Podiatric Dermatology and is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Frequently consulted by other physicians for his expertise in the area of sports- and dance-related injuries, Dr. Mendelsohn is actively involved with the American College of Podiatric Sports Medicine. He is a Clinical Advisor and columnist for the American Running and Fitness Association, and serves as a consulting podiatrist for the Washington Redskins and numerous other amateur and professional sports teams.

Dr. Mendelsohn received his undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta and earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Philadelphia's Temple University School of in 1985. He completed his general podiatric residency at the Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., (an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School) and a surgical residency at the Joslin Foot Clinic in Boston.

Married with three children, Dr. Mendelsohn is a rabid hockey fan and also loves football. He is among the many Washingtonians who dream of seeing professional baseball find a home in the Washington area as well.


Deena L. Charney D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Dr. Deena Charney is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. She also is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association. Her specialty areas include diabetic foot care and trauma/sports injuries. She is a consulting podiatrist for a number of Northern Virginia nursing home facilities and administers podiatric clinics at area Sunrise retirement facilities, as well as the Lincolnia Adult Day Care Center. She has the distinction of serving on the Ethics Committees for both Inova Fairfax and Inova Fair Oaks Hospitals, and has participated in medical ethics seminars throughout the state.

Following graduation from Albright College in Reading, Pa., Dr. Charney earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. She completed her general podiatric residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and a surgical residency at the Golden Glades Medical Center in North Miami Beach, Fla.

Born in Washington and raised in Montgomery County, Md., Dr. Charney enjoys running to stay fit and is a two-time participant in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. She and her husband can often be found spoiling their black lab, Jessica.


Gary Scheib, D.P.M.

Dr. Gary Scheib earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, where he was a Dean's List student. Following his graduation, he served residencies in primary podiatric medicine, orthopedics and surgery through the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. During that time, he had the opportunity to work with patients of many ages, backgrounds and health challenges at the Bethesda (Md.) Naval Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, and the Premier Surgical Center in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Prior to his podiatric studies, Dr. Scheib earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, and later attended George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He spent more than 20 years in the retail footwear industry, including an eight-year tenure as Department Manager for Nordstrom, Inc., a company nationally recognized for its high standards of customer service and satisfaction. He also served for more than ten years as district manager of a major shoe distribution company based in Canton, Massachusetts.

Dr. Scheib, who has always enjoyed helping people and solving problems, believes that successful doctor-patient relationships depend on both medical expertise and communication. Having helped thousands of people over two decades find comfortable, properly-fitting shoes, he gained a unique perspective on the difficulties and frustrations faced every day by those with foot and ankle ailments.

Dr. Scheib enjoys playing golf and fishing. He lives in Paris,Virginia, with his wife, Trisha, and son, Cameron. They share their home with a rather temperamental Jack Russell terrier.


Stanley Idiculla, D.P.M., A.A.C.F.A.S.

Dr. Stanley Idiculla was raised in Philadelphia, PA. He attended the University of Pittsburgh where he obtained his Bachelors of Science Degree in Neuroscience and Bachelors of Arts Degree in Philosophy. He went on to receive his doctorate from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, followed by three years of surgical training at both Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburg, PA and Alliance Community Hospital in Alliance, OH where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Idiculla has been trained extensively in the most recent techniques in reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle, trauma, and diabetic limb salvage.

Dr. Idiculla has participated heavily in research and has received awards for his involvement and contributions both nationally and statewide. He is currently an article contributor and reviewer of the coveted Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Dr. Idiculla is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the Virginia Podiatric Medical Society.
