Caring for Your Feet When You're Diabetic

Diabetes is a dangerous disease that occurs when your blood glucose levels are too high. Regardless of why you have diabetes, it can cause nerve damage, reduce blood flow to your feet and ankles, and make it harder to heal from an injury or prevent infection. Additionally, diabetic patients are more susceptible to foot issues than those without the condition. Fortunately, by visiting the specialists at one of our Family Foot and Ankle Center offices in Ashburn, Fairfax, McLean, and Reston, VA, for your diabetic foot care needs, you can take the right steps to protect your foot health.

Caring For Your Feet When You're Diabetic

If you are diabetic, foot care should be a top priority. In addition to visiting our podiatrists, you should:

  • Inspect feet daily - make sure the top and bottom of your feet are free of cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling.
  • Cut nails carefully - cut straight across and file the edges, and remember not to cut them too short.
  • Bathe feet in lukewarm water - hot water can dry out your feet, so use lukewarm water and a gentle washcloth to clean them.
  • Keep your feet warm and dry - avoid stepping in puddles, and wear socks/slippers when your feet get cold.

Diabetic Foot Care

If you are one of the many Americans living with diabetes, periodic foot exams are essential to maintain quality foot and body health. Annual visits with our professional podiatrists Ashburn, Fairfax, McLean, and Reston can prevent foot and ankle complications from diabetes. When you visit the Family Foot and Ankle Center, our podiatrists will perform a thorough exam to detect any signs of changes that can be detrimental to you. They will also check for areas that might have high pressure or loss of circulation. Additionally, if your feet are prone to corns and calluses, we will remove them—you should never do this yourself.
