Relief for Painful Bunions

Would you like relief from your painful bunions? Achieve it with the help of your podiatrists at Family Foot and Ankle Center in Fairfax, Ashburn, McLean, and Reston, VA. These podiatrists have seen and treated countless bunions. You can keep moving and do so comfortably despite your bunions.

The causes of bunions

Also called Hallux valgus, a bunion is a sore, swollen, reddened prominence at the base of the big toe. The bump often enlarges so much the big toe angles in toward or crosses over, the second and third toes. The greater the deformity is, the more symptomatic the bunion can become.

Long-standing bunions impair mobility. Patients often experience numbness, tingling, and a burning sensation as well.

How do bunions form? The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) explains that foot structure is inherited. So, if you have a first-degree relative with bunions, you may develop them too if you:

  • Have a job which has you on your feet a lot
  • Wear tight, narrow, high-heeled shoes (women develop bunions more than men because of shoe style, says the AAOS)
  • Are a dancer or engage in other activities which put a lot of pressure on the forefoot

Finding relief

At Family Foot and Ankle Center in Reston, Ashburn, McLean, and Fairfax, VA, your podiatric team evaluates scores of people who exhibit signs of bunions. Usually, conservative treatments help control symptoms and halt bunion progression.

Our care strategies may include:

  • Rest
  • Ice to the affected area
  • Shoe padding to limit friction
  • Ibuprofen for pain
  • In-office removal of calluses and corns which develop from friction
  • Orthoses, or shoe inserts, to cushion affected areas
  • Injections of corticosteroids to treat bursitis and its inflammation
  • Night-time splints for adolescents

Some individuals do require surgical bunion removal and re-alignment of the big toe joint.

Avoiding bunions

If possible, change your footwear. Choose shoes with adequate arch support and room for your toes to move around. If you are on your feet a lot, try to build periods of rest into your day. Many people feel better after losing weight.

If you begin developing symptoms, come see one of our podiatrists in Ashburn, McClean, Fairfax, or Reston, VA. He or she will do a complete podiatric exam and take X-rays to determine the extent of your bunion and the best course of treatment.
