RICHARD S. MENDELSOHN, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Richard S. Mendelsohn, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Dr. Richard Mendelsohn enjoys working with patients of all ages on a multitude of foot and ankle conditions. Widely recognized as a specialist in the treatment of sports and dance injuries, he is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.  Dr. Mendelsohn serves on the board of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia.

Frequently consulted by other physicians for his expertise in the area of sports- and dance-related injuries, he is a clinical advisor and columnist for the American Running and Fitness Association. He was named by the Consumers’ Research Council of America as one of “America’s Top Podiatrists.” Dr. Mendelsohn serves as a consulting podiatrist for numerous professional and amateur sports teams, and appeared on ABC, CBS and NBC news where he spoke about new advances in podiatry.

Dr. Mendelsohn received his undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta and earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Philadelphia’s Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1985. He completed his residency in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle at Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, (an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School).

Married with five children, Dr. Mendelsohn is a passionate hockey fan who enjoys watching and participating in a variety of other sports as well.

Dr. Petranek Podiatrist

Michael Petranek, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Dr. Michael L. Petranek is a native of Washington, D.C. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology at Brigham Young University. During the course of his studies, he had a unique opportunity to give volunteer service in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two years.  Dr. Petranek continued his education at the California College of Podiatric Medicine where he earned a Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine, graduating with honors.

He completed a rigorous three year surgical residency program at INOVA Fairfax and Georgetown University Hospitals.  This specialized training enables him to diagnose, treat and provide both conservative and surgical care for injuries, disorders, and diseases of the foot and ankle.  Dr. Petranek enjoys working with patients of all ages, giving them relief from their painful symptoms, and helping them return to full functional activity.

Dr. Petranek is board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.  He is also a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and Virginia Podiatric Medical Association.

Dr. Petranek is fluent in Spanish.  He enjoys spending his leisure time camping, boating and participating in outdoor activities with his wife and five children.  He can often be found biking on the W&OD trail or enjoying the pool with his family.

Dr. Mujkic Podiatrist

Adisa Mujkic, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Dr. Adisa Mujkic received her medical degree from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in Manhattan.  She completed her residency training at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, a teaching affiliate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Mujkic received comprehensive training in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery, including trauma, reconstructive surgery, and diabetic limb salvage. She served as Chief Resident and completed research on necrotizing soft tissue infections of the foot.

Dr. Mujkic was born in Bosnia and immigrated to the United States in the 1990’s.  She grew up in Herndon, VA with her parents and brother.   Dr. Mujkic completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, where she majored in Biology and minored in French.  During her time at UVA, Dr. Mujkic participated in humanitarian trips to New Orleans and Ghana.

Dr. Mujkic’s interests include pediatric and adult flatfoot reconstruction, bunion deformity correction, and sports medicine.  She is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Podiatric Medical Association.

In her free time, Dr. Mujkic loves to travel and cook.  She also enjoys hiking and running with her husband in the great Virginia outdoors.

Dr. Darlene N. Saheta, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Darlene N. Saheta, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Dr. Darlene N. Saheta was born and raised in Cumberland, Maryland. She graduated from The George Washington University with a Psychology major, where she grew fond of the DC Metro Area. Dr. Saheta studied Podiatric Medicine in Miami, Florida at Barry University School of Graduate Medicine. With an interest in pursuing a surgical career she was trained at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, a 3 year Surgical Program in New York, New York.

Dr. Saheta has been in practice for over 11 years and her evolved professional interests include Diabetic Limb Salvage, Wound Care, Foot /Ankle Trauma, Elective and Cosmetic Foot Surgery. She feels that by being approachable to her patients it will create a good foundation for trust and mutual respect. Her past career experiences include: teaching attending/academics at UPMC Mercy Hospital, trained in hyperbaric medicine and innovative treatments in wound care.

She is Board Certified (Diplomat) by American Board of Podiatric Surgery (now they call it American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery) in Foot Surgery. She is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

She is a very serious and competitive hockey fan and enjoys spending her weekends at various museum and music events, nature photography and checking out new art exhibits.

DEENA L. CHARNEY, D.P.M.

Deena L. Charney, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.

Dr. Deena Charney has been associated with the Family Foot and Ankle Centers for more than 10 years. Her specialty areas include diabetic and women’s foot care and trauma/sports injuries. She enjoys working with patients of all ages, especially the pediatric and geriatric populations and primarily performs preventative foot care, geriatric care and treatment for women’s foot problems.

She has the distinction of having served on the bioethics committees for both Inova Fairfax and Inova Fair Oaks Hospitals, and has participated in medical bioethics seminars throughout the state.

Dr. Charney earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Albright College (Reading, Pennsylvania) in 1989. She earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Finch University (Chicago, Illinois) in 1993. She completed three years of residency training to include a one-year rotating podiatric residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and a two-year surgical/trauma residency at the Golden Glades Medical Center in North Miami Beach, Florida.

Born in Washington and raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, Dr. Charney enjoys walking to stay fit and is a two-time participant in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. She and her husband, Larry, can often be found spending time with their two children, Samuel and Madeline.

Dr. Shaun Hafner

Dr. Shaun Hafner

Dr. Shaun C. Hafner is from New York State’s Hudson Valley. As a young man, he obtained the Eagle Scout award. He attended Potsdam College where he played on the collegiate soccer team and received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Chemistry. He obtained his doctorate from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Hafner completed an intense residency training in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at the Yale-New Haven Medical Center, the primary teaching hospital of the Yale School of Medicine, in New Haven, Connecticut. He served as Chief Resident and was recognized for his academic achievements. Dr. Hafner has been published on his original research on the Etiology of Recalcitrant Plantar Heel Pain and his review of Emerging Techniques in Revascularization for the Lower Extremity.

His comprehensive surgical residency training at Yale-New Haven Medical Center has given him an abundance of experience in elective, reconstructive and trauma procedures of the foot and ankle with emphasis on plastic surgery techniques. Dr. Hafner enjoys treating various podiatric conditions but he is most passionate in treating sport and over-use injuries.  Dr. Hafner is Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Virginia Podiatric Medical Association, and is on staff at Novant Health UVA Prince William Medical Center, Reston Hospital Center, Reston Surgery Center and Inova Loudoun Hospital.

Dr. Hafner has received multiple distinctions of being named one of Northern Virginia Magazine’s Top Doctors. His most recent recognition was in 2024. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, golf, soccer and travel. In addition, he is enthusiastic on learning in the fields of science and history. His greatest joy is spending time with his wife, his two children and his two dogs (hypoallergenic). For several years, he and his family are proud to call Northern Virginia their home.

Dr. Nancy Han

Dr. Nancy Han

Dr. Nancy Han received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers College in New Brunswick, NJ. She earned her doctorate degree from New York College of Podiatric Medicine where she held academic honors and was a recipient of several scholarships. Dr. Han also actively participated in extra-curricular activities and held numerous leadership roles. She completed her residency training at Yale – New Haven Medical Center, the primary teaching hospital of the Yale School of Medicine, where she received training in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. During this time, Dr. Han published several research articles in prestigious journals such as The Journal of Foot and Ankle surgery. Additionally, she has completed courses in AO fixation and foot/ankle arthroscopy.

Dr. Han specializes in both conservative and surgical care of all foot and ankle conditions that range from pediatric to geriatric care, including wound care and sports medicine. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Han is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and Virginia Podiatric Medical Association, and is on staff at Inova Loudoun Hospital. Dr. Han is excited to be part of the Reston and Manassas Foot and Ankle Centers, and to continue to provide dedicated care to her patients.

Dr. Steven Gordon

Dr. Steven Gordon

Dr. Steven A. Gordon graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987, and received his doctorate degree from Temple University College of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1991. He completed his residency in Reconstructive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle as well as Postgraduate Training/Fellowship in Lower Extremity Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at the Northern Virginia Podiatric Residency Program in 1994. In addition to sponsorship by the Medical College of Virginia, this comprehensive surgical residency involved training at multiple affiliated hospitals including Georgetown University Hospital and Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Dr. Gordon is Board Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He currently serves as chairman of the podiatric surgery section of Reston Surgery Center, where he sits on the Medical Executive Committee. In addition, Dr. Gordon serves as a member of the Infection Control Committee at Reston Hospital Center. He is continually involved with training surgical residents at the Medstar Washington Hospital Center Podiatric Surgical Residency Program and serves as the liaison for the Residency Program at the Reston Surgery Center.

Dr. Gordon’s special interests include reconstructive foot and ankle surgery and all aspects of medical and surgical management of the diabetic foot. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the Virginia Podiatric Medical Association, the American Diabetes Association’s Foot Council, and regularly participates in the Novant Health Prince William Medical Center’s Diabetes support group meeting and annual Diabetes Fairs. Dr. Gordon is currently on the staff of Reston Hospital Center, Reston Surgery Center, Novant Health UVA Prince William Medical Center and Inova Loudoun Hospital. He enjoys traveling, skiing, fishing, and tennis, and is an avid fan of the Washington Capitals and Nationals. His greatest enjoyment comes from spending time with his wife and three children and their many sporting activities, including ice hockey, field hockey, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.

From 2015-2021, Dr. Gordon had the distinction of being named one of Northern Virginia Magazine’s Top Doctors.
